Cemetery Walk Thursday, May 31, 2012

Learn about Monroe County’s participation in the Civil War by touring the graves of 5 Civil War veterans with stories told by costumed re-enactors!

Woodlawn Cemetery
N. Water St. Sparta, WI

Tour the 5 Civil War Veterans Graves and listen to Civil War Era violin music.  See the divining rod, a gravestone cleaning demonstration.

Flowers and decorative garden planters for sale!
Refreshments will be served.

Tours will begin at 4:00, 4:45, 5:30, & 6:15pm.

Tickets are $8, to purchase call the Deke Slayton Museum at (269-0033), or purchase tickets the day of at the event at the Cemetary.
The Walk will be on paved paths for easy walking and wheelchairs, etc.

Free Fishing Weekend:
Saturday & Sunday, June 2 – 3, 2012

Free Fishing Weekend means you can fish without a license throughout the state of Wisconsin. All the waters of the state are open, including state waters of the Great Lakes and rivers bordering Wisconsin. Residents and non-resident of all ages can fish without a fishing license (or trout or salmon stamps) over these two days. However, all other fishing regulations (length limits, bag limits, etc.) apply.

Fishing clubs, local parks departments, community centers, and civic organizations step up to offer fishing clinics in their communities.

Kids Fishing Day in Necedah

One-day license! Wisconsin offers a one-day fishing license to those anglers that want to give Wisconsin fishing a try. Choose your water. Choose your friends. Choose your day. It’s that simple.

Remember, kids 15 and under never need a license.

Open House Day and National Trails Day

All trail fees on DNR-owned properties are waived on National Trails Day.

All DNR-owned properties participate in the statewide open house day.  All trail fees on state operated designated state trails are waived statewide open house day. Cooperatively-run state trails also may participate in the statewide open house day.

ARRGH MATEY’S HOLD ON TO YOUR LOOT — Pirates on the Square 

Kicks Off this Saturday, June 2nd 

MONROE, Wis. — Main Street Monroe’s summer event “Pirates on the Square” kicks off this Saturday, June 2 with a swashbuckling party.The opening event is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Square, ending with a free movie at Goetz Theatre for the first 300 children who claim a token at the Main Street information booth. More than a dozen organizations and booths will join the farmer’s market vendors on the North Side of the Square for the event. Children will also have the opportunity to get a treasure map passport stamped at participating downtown businesses.

Children and adults are encouraged to dress like pirates or mermaids and enjoy the following activities:

Face painting, Pirate’s Tattoo Parlor, Mermaid Hair Salon
Pirate Ship Races sponsored by Shakespeare on the Edge

Celebrate another season of great Wisconsin history at the Villa

Louis with tours of the mansion, refreshments and reduced admission. And you’ll want to stick around for a rousing game of vintage 1860s baseball.

The historic Villa Louis mansion is the centerpiece of a grand Victorian estate built by the family of Hercules Dousman, a frontier entrepreneur who amassed a fortune in the fur trade and other frontier investments. The mansion has just undergone a top-to-bottom documentary restoration that has returned the Dousman home to the splendor of its 1890s heyday, using British Arts and Crafts interior designs inspired by famed designer William Morris.
