Shakespeare on the EdgeShakespeare on the Edge, Inc, of Monroe, WI, is the proud recipient of a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board (WAB), with funding in part from the National Endowment for the Arts. Shakespeare on the Edge was awarded a Creative Communities Program grant to make possible Shakespeare! By Kids, for Kids! for Green County youth in 2014. The program is also being funded in part by the Monroe Optimists and Colony Brands, Inc.

Shakespeare! By Kids, for Kids! is designed to bring arts programming to Green County and to introduce youth to the amazing art of Shakespeare. Focusing on youths’ strengths, the program’s philosophy is to bring youth together and enable youth to inspire youth. The project is about engaging young audiences through the works of Shakespeare, that might not otherwise be introduced until high school, in a fun and exciting new approach: for youth, by youth. This project will present opportunities to: build confidence, instill a love of literature, and promote literacy while providing a creative theatre arts outlet for all—regardless of experience.

The traveling youth core company of Shakespeare on the Edge will travel to Green County schools in early January promoting the work of Shakespeare! By Kids for Kids! The major project of Shakespeare! By Kids for Kids! is a community youth production of Shakespeare’s comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, that will be performed at the Monroe Arts Center, Friday, February 7 and Sunday, February 9. The youth production is open to youth in Green County and beyond. The play is a modern, abridged adaptation. Participation is free. Auditions for youth ages 7-18 will be held Thursday, January 16 from 4pm-6:30pm and Friday, January 17 from 4pm-6:30pm at the Monroe Arts Center. Rehearsals begin January 20 and will be held Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm through the week of performances. A minimum of 28 youth will be cast.

Shakespeare on the Edge’s (SOTE) mission is to bring youth and adolescents together to work on a common vision of self-respect, self-awareness, and respect for others by exploring the world of Shakespeare. SOTE focuses on creating positive relationships, offers opportunities to build confidence and self-esteem, and delivers engaging youth arts to our community.

Beyond the free youth community production of Much Ado About Nothing, youth and teens can become involved with the Shakespeare Project, which is a dynamic, fun arts experience that runs from February 8 through May 27 at the Monroe Arts Center. The Shakespeare Project kicks off on Saturday, February 8 at MAC with an American Players Theatre young actors’ workshop. Contact us to register and for more info.
