Regional Southwest Wisconsin Area Homeschool Book & Resource Fair May 9th
The Home Educators Cooperative 2014 Book Fair will take place on Friday, May 9th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the G.Y.M. in Viroqua.
The Book Fair, which began more than 8 years ago as a way for homeschool moms to sell their used books and curriculum at the end of the school year, now includes displays, prizes, and breakout sessions. It is considered the largest annual homeschool event in southwestern Wisconsin; pulling from the growing homeschool community in the five county area including Vernon, Monroe, La Crosse, Richland, and Crawford Counties.
“In the last 3 years we’ve added vendors, doubled the number of sellers, added workshops, added door prizes, extended the hours and increased advertising as well as public awareness for homeschoolers”, said Book Fair Coordinator, Saunnia Huggins.
Moving the Book Fair location again this year, came late in the planning process which delayed getting support from many homeschool curriculum companies. One of the Book Fair organizers, Cathie Barton said, “We are blessed that Dave and Kathy Clark, the owners of The G.Y.M. stepped in to allow us the use of the building. They are very supportive and gracious to the needs of families, children, homeschoolers, and the community. Additionally, an unexpected gift ($137 value) from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine has been donated, which all families attending the Book Fair this year will be eligible to receive. “
While the focus is on homeschooling, the Fair has information and resources for anyone interested in education and learning. The 2014 Home Educators Book Fair will feature:
* more than 35 individual sellers and 3 breakout sessions;
* giveaways, catalogs, and samples from more than 15 companies;
* special gift from The Old Schoolhouse Magazine for all families attending this year.
Breakout sessions this year include:
> 5:00 pm Homeschool Q and A – A panel of experienced homeschool moms will answer questions. You may submit questions at the Fair or in advance by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
> 5:45 pm Are Your Cleaning/Beauty Products Dangerous? – Heidi Hein of Nature’s Scent Body Care in Hillsboro will talk about the ingredients in products you normally use and show how you can make healthy changes in your home.
> 6:30 pm Eat Naturally, Eat Healthy – Rebecca Felton of Earth Hands Therapies in Cashton will show how herbs, raw food, juicing and smoothies can start you on a journey to better health.
The Home Educators Cooperative Book Fair, is organized every year by parents. The goal of the event is to strengthen the homeschool community and provide a way for current and prospective homeschoolers to be encouraged and get information — a way for them to see curriculum, ask questions, and talk to others who support home education. The Book Fair is open to the public. Admission is free.
The G.Y.M., is located on Highway 14 and County Road Y, between Westby and Viroqua, next to Cornerstone Christian Academy.
The goal of Home Educators Cooperative is to support, educate and encourage homeschool parents and families while encouraging homeschoolers of all backgrounds/styles to work together as a community for the benefit of our children and homeschooling.
